St. Columb’s National School
Ethos Statement
The ethos of the school reflects the extent to which the school promotes the moral, intellectual, personal and social development of its pupils.
In a Church of Ireland school the beliefs of the church will permeate the whole life of the school. Though, at times, these beliefs may become manifest in an open and clear manner, their influence is mainly via the approaches to learning as opposed to the outcomes of learning. The beliefs tend to set boundaries rather than fixed points.
The Board of Management believe that it is necessary to maintain the distinctive characteristics of the Church of Ireland school.
In St. Columb’s our vision is:
•
To provide a safe, secure and caring environment for all its pupils.
•
To be child centred and to promote the self-confidence and self-esteem of each pupil.
•
To provide for each pupil a stimulating and imaginative environment for academic growth regardless of ability.
•
To encourage the spiritual and moral growth of each pupil.
•
To teach pupils to work independently and with their peers.
•
To teach each pupil to value and respect the contributions and the views of others.
•
To provide parents with opportunities to work as partners in the education of their children.
To enable the school to function as a Church of Ireland School which includes the following;
a)
The Church of Ireland School is part of the local community and has strong links with the parish.
b)
The traditions and teachings of the church inform the position in regard to moral issues which arise in the teaching of secular subjects.
c)
Religious Education occupies a central position in the school curriculum and is regarded as a core subject. Generally speaking, all pupils attend classes in religious education.
d)
Values such as honesty, justice, sensitivity to others and civivresponsibility are nurtured and protected. The justification of such qualities is based on the church’s interpretation of the bible.
e)
The work of the school is carried out in an atmosphere of tolerance and respect for religious differences.
f)
The teaching of Religious Education and the prayer life of the of school community are the means by which a personal relationship with God is nurtured within the pupils.
